Ask Barb: Headboard Alternatives

 tasselsheadboardTassels Interiors

Question– Hi Barb, do you have any suggestions for creating an inexpensive and creative alternative to hang above my bed, instead of a traditional headboard?  I am on a limited budget, but would like it to look unique and beautiful.  Thank you in advance for your suggestions.  Cheryl from Fairfield, Connecticut

Hi Cheryl – GREAT QUESTION – there are plenty of ways you can style the space above your bed in lieu of a headboard, and work within your budget!

Groupings of framed artwork, photos, or fabric samples are a great way to style the wall above your bed.  I love these black and white photos arranged in a heart shape.

For a bedroom that needs a focal point, use a large scale design wallpaper, or a large piece of artwork.  I showed you some beautiful Thibaut wallpaper designs here, that would be perfect for a headboard.

Hang a quilt or a rug!   Both would add a nice intimate feel and add coziness to the room with its texture.  For years I hung an antique quilt above my bed in the guest room, the soft yellows and reds warmed up the room, and made it very comfortable for guests.  I wish I had a picture of that room to show you!

Old wood doors – if you want to add a vintage touch to your bedroom, or you prefer recycled elements, old doors are a nice idea.

Wooden pallets have become popular headboards!  They add warmth to the room because of the materials natural qualities.  These headboards can add a rustic or vintage touch in the room, and they are also great for contemporary decors.

And last but not least – upholstered headboards!!! One of my personal favorites!  Your options are endless!  You can choose any size, shape, and fabric!  We have designed several recently for clients with button tufting and nail heads.  These details add contrast and dimension to the overall appearance of your whole décor.
